Shopping Lags

Those lazy hazy, crazy days of summer are upon us—but don’t let them drag down your revenue. There are ways to still make July earning sparkle or pop, depending on your favorite form of fireworks.

Now just let me say right up front here, I am not a gamer. Computer games are like a foreign language to me…yet I read with interest the latest Steam sale and the upcoming Steam Convention. Seriously? All this for computer games? Read the article and you may feel old, but you will certainly take away a new perspective on generating income in 2021. Take that whole mentality and lay it over your business. What if your business attracted the same salivating interest of gamers itching to know the leaked dates of the next Steam sale? What if your business was currently lining up attendees for your next convention of interested shoppers? Don’t write this off just because it sounds fantastic!

Your goal this July is to generate a whiff of this same enthusiasm for your business. Build Fire suggests twenty ways to accomplish the impossible:

  • Insert a call to action in your email signature.

  • Set up a Google small business account to attract more attention.

  • Offer a free or discounted product or service.

  • Host a presentation in your store, bring in a speaker.

  • Use Facebook Instant Articles to garner more eyes

Read the other ideas, all of them winners, and then plan something. Something big. Use one or two of these ideas to make it sizzle, sparkle and pop. Remember, you don’t have to do this all by yourself. Bring in some outside help. Partner with another business. Take advantage of the Chamber to connect with our area.

In short, become the architect of your own future. I have always loved the old Kevin Costner movie line, If you build it, they will come. I know, it’s pure fiction. But think about the story line. If there was no ballpark, would the people have been driving down that rural Iowa road? Nope. In another favorite, Frances Mayes book Under the Tuscan Sun, the tracks were built before there was a train that could handle the trip through the Alps. Begin with a plan and expect success.

It takes faith. It takes vision. It takes energy. It takes ideas. I get all that. But remember that you are part of something bigger than just your own little business. You are part of a Chamber rooting for you, publicizing your efforts, offering advice and support. Yet it still begins with you. When you take control of your own sizzle, sparkle and pop you write your own success story. Make it a good one!
