Grow Jolly
This is such an important time for bringing in customers, growing your base, and setting your business up for a profitable new year. And the important thing—it’s not too late to take advantage of holiday good will. Whether you have planned out a great set of events or just now scratching your head wondering what to do, now is a perfectly good time to give it a whirl.
Find twenty-two ideas for making your business sparkle with holiday good cheer at this site. I’ll expand on a few of the suggestions you can still put into play. It doesn’t have to cost you a lot of money or involve extensive decorations…you can go big or go small with any of these ideas.
Partner with another business to maximize the effect. Local garden stores may be interested in placing poinsettias for sale in your business. It’s a win/win. Less decorating for you, and sales for the gardener. When you both put out the word, it’s double the traffic. The possibilities are endless.
Invite local artists to show their work and cover your walls. Who needs to hang décor when you can benefit local talent and minimize the decorations in one fell swoop?
Think about simple refreshments. Bagels and cream cheese with a wassail bowl. Offer Christmas cookies or a cheese tray with sparkling water and sliced fruit to jazz up the punch bowl. Don’t decide on anything labor intensive or overly expensive. The idea is to make money, not spend it. We’ve talked about collaboration—what about inviting a local bakery to sell their wares and buy a few to open for refreshments?
Invite some special entertainment. Chamber choirs, elementary class teachers…there are lots of possibilities for bringing in talent, and the talent often brings parents.
Create a photo-op. Invite grandparents to bring in their kiddos for a picture. Contact an art class to see if someone would like to create one for you to use and for them to have in their portfolio.
Sponsor a food drive for the Community Services League. Collect slightly worn shoes. Put out a box for gloves and hats for the homeless.
The most important part of the season is the good will you generate, and somehow, the business seems to flow out of your efforts. This intangible asset becomes an organic form of generating revenue without even try to wring dollars out of customers. I like to think of is as business glitter. Sprinkle it generously and watch what happens! When you consider the benefits of engaging others, there are many reasons to move forward and virtually no reason for considering the possibilities.
Here’s the important part: It doesn’t have to be all you…a part time worker might be interested in pulling all the pieces together. A family member might be willing to step in. Don’t let your own energy level dictate what you will earn this holiday season.
